I want to share one good news with you all. Finally, my tourist visa for Canada got approved and I am back from Vacations. And in this article, I want to share my experience with you about how I got my Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). I will be sharing the complete process and what documents I submitted with the application. I submitted my application for the Canada tourist visa at the VFS New Delhi office and the experience was good.
If you are a first time visitor to Canada as a tourist, student, or for business, you may have a problem in filling your application form, collecting all the documents, and many other things. I too had many questions in my mind before filling the application for a Canadian tourist visa and do not want to hire any tourist or visa consultant but the internet helped me a lot in clearing my doubts. There are many good forums and websites which have valuable information for free.
I applied under “Visiting family or friends” category as I have to visit my brother who has a PR status in Canada and he gave me the invitation letter. An invitation letter is very important if someone is calling you to Canada.
So, if you have made your mind to visit Canada as a tourist then, first of all, determine your eligibility to visit Canada. You can visit CIC website for it.
If you found eligible to visit Canada as per the above eligibility test, you can apply for the visa.
You can apply for a Canadian tourist visa in 2 ways. First via online application and the second through an offline form by visiting embassy or VFS office in your area. VFS is the best option if you are applying offline and I haven’t found anyone going to the Canadian embassy themselves for a visa.
I applied for visitor visa through offline method via VFS Global as I don’t have enough time and online process generally takes a long time [that is what I have heard]. An offline process takes around 10 business days or 2 weeks. You can get full information about Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV) for Canada at CIC website.
Note: Current processing time from India is 44 days.
Don’t forget to include Niagara Falls in your day to day plan, as it is one of the most famous tourist places in Canada, and without seeing it your trip is incomplete. Check the below video and you would know yourself.
My Documents List for Canadian Tourist Visa
I included many documents along with the application form to make sure I am in a good position to get Canada visitor visa. Below are the documents which I included for your reference. You can include other documents too which are suitable and can make your application stronger.
1. Document Checklist [IMM 5558]
2. Application for Temporary Resident Visa [IMM 5257]
3. Family Information [IMM 5645]
4. A Bonafide letter from my company stating that they don’t have any problem and my leaves are approved. The letter should be on official letterhead and signed by your HR. Include an original letter not duplicate.
5. Income tax returns for the past 3 years, though 2 years ITR are sufficient as per the CIC website.
6. Bank statements for the past 6 months showing I have enough money for my stay in Canada and I have money to return back.
7. Letter of invitation from the person inviting you (from my brother) indicating the purpose and duration of the visit.
8. Family details of the person inviting you. Also include their passport number and citizenship.
9. My brother and his family PR card photocopy.
10. My brother’s job offer letter, Notice of Assessments (NOA) and pay slips.
11. I also included my marriage and my child’s birth certificate. This is for showing my strong relationship with my home country.
12. Detailed itinerary and purpose of visit.
13. Round trip air tickets.
14. Proof of previous travel. I included the photostat of my Japan visa and landing stamp.
15. My stocks (shares) statement.
16. Medical insurance for the period of my stay with $100,000 coverage. This I booked with an Indian insurance company as it is cheaper depending upon the number of days you stay in Canada.
17. Last but not the least, do write a cover letter supporting your application and submit it.
Check Different Letter Formats for Canada Tourist Visa (TRV)
I applied in June 2015 and since then, I can see there is a new form or instruction booklet added in the document list for Canadian tourist visa called Visa office instructions – Visit [IMM 5881], which has mainly documented checklist for Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). I am very glad to see that CIC has made a very good list of documents and removed all the confusion which the applicant can have. Do download it.
Note: I would like to thank my brother for helping me collecting the required documents and clearing my doubts wherever needed.
Tips for Canada Temporary Resident Visa – TRV
Below are few tips which I would like to share with you if you are thinking to apply for Canadian tourist visa.
1. Make a list of documents that you need for applying.
2. Collect all the information needed to fill in your application.
3. Fill out the required application forms as applicable to you.
4. Always give correct information on your application forms.
5. If possible, book your flight tickets in advance and include them with the application. It really makes a very big difference and make your application stronger.
6. Medical insurance is also good if you are going to Canada.
7. Do get your application checked by someone else [Very important]. I made one mistake in my main application and will share what I did to correct it in the next post.
8. Make visa officer believe that you are going to return back and have sufficient funds for stay by giving correct information. Don’t FAKE anything else you may be banned for a visa.
9. Do include your cover letter with the application stating why you want to go to Canada and in that letter show your strong relationship with the home country.
After submitting all the documents I got multiple entry Canada visitor visas till the validity of my passport which is 5 years.
Fees of Canada Temporary Resident Visa or Tourist visa
Current fees of Canadian temporary resident visa (TRV) is $100 (CAD). This fee is same for single entry and multiple entry visa. By default you will get multiple-entry Canadian visitor visa.
There is no option to select whether you are applying for a single entry or multiple entry visa now. Earlier the fees of a single entry and multiple entries were different and you also get the option to choose for what type of visa you are applying.
Hope you get some valuable information from my experience and would submit your tourist visa application with more confidence. If you have any doubts about filling your Canadian tourist visa application do let me know through comments or email and I will try to help in the best possible way but remember, I am not a tourist visa expert. Good Luck!!

Dear Pawan,
Thanks for your information. I am from Iraq, with my wife we are going to attend a Sister Cities Conference in Canada, and we will get invitation letter soon. in the Form IMM5257E I have the below questions:
1. For such kind of Conference, in the “Purpose of Visit” what we should chose? Business, Tourism, …?
2. Funds available for my stay, how much CAD we should write? it must be the same amount in the bank support letter?
3. The Organization who invite us will not pay expenses, food, …. during our stay there, what should we prepare for the officer? we both are working in a company with a good monthly income!.
Thanks!
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Qadir,
1. You can chose “Other” and then can fill information in the field next to it.
2. This is little tricky. You should make a finance document and include all asset you have with their values and thus you can show how much money you have.
Funds available should be money in your bank account plus any money which can be easily liquidify like shares.
3. For this you should show sufficient funds and if you can, I will advise to book hotel and round trip tickets in advance. Also do not forget to include letter from your office that you are working there and will be on leave for that period and will join company after that.
Regards,
Pawan

Purpose should be for what your are going. If you are going to visit friend and see Canada’s beauty write it.
Yes, do ask for invitation letter in which your friend will say that he takes responsibility of all your expense during stay. Cover letter can include why you are going to Canada and reason in support.
Include all the proofs of your property, it will help you make your application strong.Your past travel history will help you include photo stats of your visiting stamp or boarding passes.

I am working as an advocate in India. i am 24 single nd self dependent. i hv planned to visit Canada to attend marriage of my real sis although i refused Canada trv last year. but after that i visited uk and japan for a short period. i have enough money approx $ 22000 in my accounts. so, what are the chances of visa for such a strong purpose now?.
Pawan Bahuguna
You have a good chance now, can I know what were the reasons for rejection?
Hardeep
Hi Pawan,
Me and my wife both age 65 and 60 respectively are planning to visit Canada to attend our son’s wedding in Montreal in sept. We are planning to leave in 2nd week of july to spend time with my brother in law at Vancouver. I am a retired Army officer pensioner, but not filed I T return since last 5 yrs as tax is deducted at source. We own a flat at Bangalore. Other documents are ok. Your advice please.
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Hardeep Sir,
You have a very good chance to get approved. Just include invitation letter and wedding invitation with you application.
Yes, show all your property which you have in your name or wife’s name. Include all the income source and bank statements. Show at least $1000/week for your stay or ask your son to write in invitation letter that he will take care of all expenses and include his pay stub.
If you don’t have ITR, show the proof where your Tax was deducted like from Bank etc.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any confusion. Though I am not visa consultant but will provide advice as per my experience.
Aditi
Hi Pawan,
Thanks a lot for useful information and tips on filing Canadian Visitor Visa.
I have few questions regarding my application.
My husband and I are in US on H1/H4 Visa. We plan to visit my Sister-in-law and her family in Canada.
1. How many pay stubs do we need to show in application?
2. Should we show ITR for both US and India?
3. Should we show bank account details for both my Husband and me?
4. What would be the turn around time for Visa to come, if we apply online?
Would really appreciate your response on this.
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Aditi
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Aditi,
1. 6 month salary slips will be good.
2. If you have filled regular ITR for both US and India include both.
3. Yes, if both are going please include bank statements for 6 month (Both).
4. From India it usually take more time if we apply online. I don’t have much Idea from US.
Hope that helps.
Aditi
Thanks a lot for the reply.
Princy
Hi,
I want to apply for a visitor visa as i have to get my eyes checked from a renowned doctor recommended by my friend. My uncle has already visited him once and is going again for the treatment. We both have got the invitation letter in the same letter head and applying together. Please suggest me what all documents I need to attach to get my visa approved, also i have no stamp of any international visit on my passport.
Do i still need the bonafied letter from my company head?
Please help me with the document checklist as I want to visit in July end.
Thanks in advance.
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Princy,
You can enclosed any relevant documents that shows you have strong commitment to your country and will surely come back after treatment. Please check my document list which I submitted.
Yes, please take bonafied letter from your company and its good if you also include letter from your company that you have taken leave for that period. Do make sure you have enough funds for your stay and treatment and do include funds statement along wit other docs.
Good Luck!
Princy
Thanks for your comment.. There is one more doubt you have mentioned that I need to submit ITR for past 2 years but I never submitted it though I have form 16 and recently submitted ITR online but the process of verification is going to take time so can I submit the filed ITR copy?
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Princy,
Yes, if you haven’t got ITR, submit your form 16. Also you may include reason for not having ITR.
Princy
I have the acknowledgement for ITR submission for 15-16 which is under processing so that will do? Also for 13-14 I did not had any tax and have the TWS and salary structure so is that sufficient?
Pawan Bahuguna
Yes, you can show that and also give letter stating reason for not having ITR for previous years.
Nafees Naz Bhatti
Hello Pawan, I’m Nafees Bhatti from Pakistan.

Dear Pawan,
Thanks for the neatly explained visa process.
We (my wife and 2 kids), have planned for a vacation in US & Canada. We all already have US B1-B2 visas. We want to attend my nephew’s marriage in US on 11th June. So for that reason we have already booke our return tickets with departure on 7th June. After staying there for a couple of weeks, we planned to visit my brother (he and his wife both are PR there) in Vancouver for about 2 weeks.
But yesterday when I went to a visa consultant to apply for Canada visa, they said its not possible to get visa by 7th June, giving reason that there is lot of rush due to summer vacations etc.
Now we are heart broken and confused and don’t know what to do.
We have all the documents you have mentioned above.
Infact me and my wife had Canadian Visas but expired now.
We are still planning to apply for the visa, with an option to cancell and rebook our tickets.
Kindly, advice/suggest on this matter and also suggest if I should apply directly through VFS (Jalandhar) or should I take servics of a visa consultant.
My main objective is to same time as much as possible, so that we can leave as early as possible.
Thanks
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Singh,
Visa consultant may be right, due to summer vacations, Canada visa office must be flooded with visa applications. But still there are around 25-26 days for departure.
I will suggest to directly apply to VFS office as you have all the documents and you already had approved visa earlier, so getting visa won’t be any big problem for you except time constraints.
Now, even official Canada Visa website say’s it will take around 20 working days, I will suggest you to apply TRV ASAP and you may have chance to get visa on time.
Or if you can directly apply tourist visa from VFS Delhi office (It took 14 Working days for me).
Do not forget to completely fill your application form and check it again before submitting as unfilled or wrong information can delay your visa.
Hope you get visa on time.
Regards,
Pawan
M Singh
Dear Pawan,
Thanks for the advice. I’ve decided to apply the visa, and lets see….
Pawan Bahuguna

Roxy
Hi Pawan
Thanks for all the information. Really grateful to you!!
I am from India and have family and job here.
I have few qs pls ans if possible for you.
1. Do we have to get all the docts notarised or attested? Is it necessary? What did you do?
2. I am showing purpose to visit Canada as Holiday for 15 days. I am confused if they ask me qs like why I have chosen particular Canada for holidays? I have no relatives living there.
3. Should I send coloured copy or normal black and white will also work? What did you do?
Thanks
Roxy
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Roxy,
I haven’t notarized any documents. But if you have any situation like different name on different documents, then you can make one.
No they will not bother about that, just submit proper documents and do submit travel plan your itinerary.
I used black & white copies, its up to you.
Roxy
Hi Thanks for your reply. I handed over my application on 20-Ap-2016. Now, waiting for the outcome. I have submitted following docts: Pls see if I missed something?

Roxy
Hi Pawan!
Regret to update you that my visa has been refused mentioning few below reasons:
Purpose of visit- I mentioned tourism
Travel History: I have no international visits
Anyways, thanks for your help!
Pawan Bahuguna
Sorry to hear that Roxy, From which location you applied. Also did you submitted confirmed hotel and flight bookings?
Roxy
I applied from Delhi. I booked my return flight tickets, attached hotel booking for first 3 days and mentioned dates for my 15 days travel plan in cover letter. The purpose of travel was tourism and this might be a kick ass reason for not getting grant as they might suspect that I will not return to India. I have no international travel history.
Pawan Bahuguna
I doubt in 3 days hotel booking if you are going for 15 days period. Where you have shown your remaining days?
Neharika
Hi Pawan..Can You please let me know if we are applying offline from India whether we need Hard Copy or original Invitation Letter or we can get the printout of scanned copy..
please let me know..
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Neharika,
The printout can do, but include some document to verify the signature of the invitee.
Ripudaman
Hey..
I have my uncle in canada and I wish to visit him during my vacations this year. I have a few doubts, so if you could please clear them..
1) Me or my parents don’t really have 5-6 lakhs in our bank accounts from the past 6 months. But we can deposit around 2-3 lakhs in my account right now so will it work ?
2) My uncle plans on calling his parents (i.e. my grandparents) to canada for a short visit. So is it possible for him to invite me as well as his parents together? Or will our visa get cancelled that way ?
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi,
1. Are you dependent on your parents?
Also depositing money at once is not good as they check statements for six month and can know that you have deposited money intentionally.
2. Your uncle should be meet minimum income threshold for this. Check http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5256ETOC.asp#incometables
Jesus
How do you know if your Canadian visa was approved?
Did you have to take medical exams later?
Pawan Bahuguna
I came to know about my visa approval, when I went to collect my passport. Medical exam is only for particular countries.
Bobby
My brother applied last month. He got tourist visa. He has attached his father property with his documents. He got the visa. u said it will not work.
Pawan Bahuguna
Hey,
You didn’t told what documents your brother submitted and if he is dependent on your father or not. There are many criteria of visa approval and it all depends about Canada embassy.
I am not any visa consultant, so all the information I am telling may not be true or applicable to you. It’s all my experience.
Rahul
Today I’m so worried. I have been 24 days. I didn’t got any response. Will result positive? Is travel history is mandatory??
Pawan Bahuguna
Check status where you applied with your application number. It may take some more time, so don’t worry. Approval totally depends upon documents submitted by you and their authenticity. Travel history is not mandatory, hope you have enough money for your stay and expenses in Canada.
Bobby
I want to apply for tourist visa of Canada. Will property of my father will be ok? If yes tell.
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Bobby,
It depends upon you. If you are dependent on your father, then letter from your father stating he is sponsoring will be good. If you are not dependent then it will not work.
Also please consult CIC website.
Gagan
Hi Pawan, me and my husband applied tourist visa for Canada to visit my husband cousin marriage. I applied visa from Jalandhar on 18 March 2016. When my passport will returned. I have one daughter age 4 years and I’m leave my daughter in India. So do you think my visa will be approved or not. Please help me.
Pawan Bahuguna
It totally depends upon the documents which you have applied. If you have given all required documents, then they don’t have any reason to reject your tourist visa.
It usually takes minimum 13 working days.
Rahul
Offline applied from Jalandhar Punjab?
Pawan Bahuguna
For visitor visa (from outside Canada) its 13 working days.
Rahul
How much time tourist visa takes in embassy? I applied on 14 march, how many days they will take to the decision??
Pawan Bahuguna
Depends upon the location from where you have applied and the mode of application. Have you applied online or offline.
Offline application in New Delhi takes 2 weeks.
gopi

Rahul
After getting visa., if we are on tourist visa, can we get work permit..there..is there any way?
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Rahul,
Don’t go that way. On tourist visa you can only visit and explore Canada. To work there you need invitation from employer.
Just go and enjoy beauty of Canada. If you want to settle there then go for PR.
Rahul
Yes I have given the statement on my letter head pad that I am travelling to Canada .I want to go niagra falls and after then after Vancouver .total stay of 10 days..I have shown the hotel booking as well in Toronto.I have written simply.coz English men are very wise.rest any questn else..please tell.me ..
Pawan Bahuguna
You have good chance, so keep finger crossed.
Soban
How can my relatives send me invitation letter from Canada? I mean, are they have to submit any document to Canadian government?
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Soban,
Just ask them to write letter addressed to Canadian embassy, which should include why your relatives are inviting you, their full family details, passport numbers and also bank statements and salary slips.
After writing invitation letter ask them to sign and send it to you by Courier or Scan copy.
Rahul

Pranav prajapati
Hi Pawan…congrats for visa…..my name is Pranav….i will be going to canada on student visa. I want to take my wife on tourist visa. Can you please guide me….should i take her visa after my student visa or b4? how to Book air tickets, hotel booking, car booking which are fully refundable…How to write travel itinerary? what should i write for purpose of her travel? we don’t have any relative in Canada…..
waiting for your response….
Thank you in advance.
Pawan Bahuguna
Hi Pranav,
Are you taking short term course or full 1-2 year course? For long term course I think your wife can get temporary working visa, please check CIC website.
Travel itinerary is something which you are planning for your wife, that where she will go and how she is going to spend time. If you are planning to go for sight seeing just put that there.
Tickets can be booked online and refundable tickets are hard to find.
Lalit Mohan Chadda
If passport details of sponsoring person & his spouse or of all members of family of person sponsoring.
Please advise.
Pawan Bahuguna
I think sponsor persons can mention only about family members who are in Canada.
Pankaj Patni
I just got a letter from Canada embassy and they mentioned that “you failed to provide truthful background information in that you have failed to declare all of your family members as required”.
I got this. Actually it was typing error i forgot to mention the family detail so now what kind of letter i should give to convince him actually I m having brothers and sisters but not in Canada. Please guide me asap.
Pawan Bahuguna
I Pankaj,
I think you have done a great mistake of not providing correct information. Hope you are not banned from re-applying for visa. Now there is no point of letter as they have already rejected your application.
If you are not banned, you can re-apply anytime with correct information. If you are reapplying do not forget to mention your old UCI number and fill all the fields of form carefully.
pankaj patni
sir actually right away they haven’t give me refusal they asked to give appropriate information and asked to submit me the explanation.so now what kind of apologize letter should i give him please guide
Pawan Bahuguna
That’s good, explain them why you missed the information and provide complete detail now in letter.
If you have forgotten, you can write due to human mistake you missed the information and that you do not intend to provide wrong information. Do give them correct information.

Plz see if it’s convenient for you to mail us covering letter.
Also, if its advisable to enclose two sponsorship letters as we are to visit two different places in canada.
Two of our friends residing at two different places have invited us over there.

Hi Lalit,
There are lots of cover letter available online, you can use any one. The point is to provide correct information. Cover letter should also include passport details of sponsor including family.
Yes, include both the sponsorship letters along with purpose of visit. It will give more weightage. This is my opinion and I am not a lawyer and expert on Visa consultation. Hope that helps.

What do you mean by no one will give you Canadian Visa, you just have to apply with proper documents. Its tough but not impossible.
